Watermelons
• Watermelon is a sweet and delicious warm season fruit, but can be found in stores all year round.
• It is part of the cucumber and squash family.
• Watermelon is 92% water.
• It is considered the most refreshing, thirst quenching fruit of all.
• There are more than 50 varieties of watermelon, including a seedless variety.
• Most have red flesh, but there are orange and yellow-fleshed varieties .
• The largest watermelon on record (Guinness Book of World Records) weighed 262 pounds.
Suggestions
• When selecting a watermelon, it should be heavy for its size. Most of the weight is water.
• Store uncut at room temperature for up to 1 week. Once cut, keep refrigerated for 2-3 days.
• Add chunks of watermelon to your favorite fruit salad. Use the shell as a bowl for serving.
• Replace tomatoes in your favorite salsa recipe with watermelon for a refreshing twist!
